The comics doldrums

I've been neglecting my poor blog lately.  I didn't get any comics last week, and only two this week, including the last issue of R.E.B.E.L.S.  My pull list has really dwindled and there seems less and less to be excited about in the comics world.  I wasn't that thrilled with how Brightest Day panned out, so color me less than excited for Flashpoint.  (Even though the promise of seeing DC's superheroes through time and especially, the past is somewhat tempting.)  But the idea of trying to get a handle on a massive storyline spanning dozens (?) of books seems daunting and stressful, not fun, to me.

Even more fitting is that Smallville wrapped up with a rather lukewarm finale.  I tried really hard to like that show, and there were a handful of episodes that did truly send me into a comic-induced giddy-fest, but the finale (and its preceding two episodes) just didn't do it for me.  It was written more as a love letter to long-time fans, so most of the sentiment sailed farther over my head than Clark Kent finally figuring out how to fly higher than a 747.  Lame simile, I know.

Also, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which was I show I initially disliked but now have come around to, has been cancelled.  I do not know the fate of Young Justice (is it coming back for a second season?) and the Wonder Woman pilot has been passed over.

So it seems as though I am about to embark on a journal into a comics desert for the foreseeable future.

Does anyone have any giddy-fyingly good comics prospects that you're excited to hear about?

For Flashpoint, do like I do :P
(the same went for Blackest Night)
Wait for TPBs and get them when they get cheaper after release~

Poor Brave and the Bold, right?
Oh well... at least we're still gonna have a full season before the end.
With the return of the JLI! And more songs!

As for comics, I've been reading lots of 80s ol' comics. Good stuff. Instead of the latest ones, give a read to some oldies if you're are able to come across some. (I just discovered "The Heckler", another Ambush Bug-esque character from Keith Giffen I never heard about until now!)

God, but I love Brave & the Bold. So I am equally sad that it is going to be its last season. will be available on DVD which is a very good thing.

On the PLUS side, J'onn J'onnz is back amongst the living, which can only be a good thing. Aquaman too. The Flashpoint stuff looks moderately interesting, although I am certainly not going to be buying the whole kit and kaboodle. But seeing Hal as a pilot looks like fun.

You COULD wander over to the Greener side of the looks as though there is going to be all sorts of good stuff going on with Green Lanterns. Not that I'm trying to proselytize or anything.

Hah! Of COURSE I am!

Check out the Justice League International comics on amazon.

I just read the first one. It has Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Martin Manhunter, and Batman. Also you could see Batman disciplining Guy Gardner in the first volume!

This month's solicitations are going to kick my butt in the wallet. August is filled with great stuff I am compelled to buy:

* The two JLofA Retro-Actives: Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire is cause for celebration! Plus, Conway on the Detroit team one last time makes me happy. $4.99 ea.

* The two Wonder Woman Retro-Actives: I'm buying the '80s to be a completist, but I loved Messner-Loebs' humanist work on WW in the '90s so much I bough crappy WW comics for fifteen years after he left. Cullins drew one of my favorite arcs from that run, but I'm hoping his art style went back to '80s clean of '90s excess. $4.99 ea.

*DC COMICS PRESENTS JLA- HEAVEN’S LADDER #1: I've wanted to read this for years, but I hate the unwieldy Treasury format, so I'll finally get to buy this thing as a standard comic. $7.99.

*DC COMICS PRESENTS THE TEEN TITANS #1: Mike Allred on the Titans with good 'ol Bob Haney scripting? Such fun, and such a deal! $7.99.

If none of that floats your boat, try the backlist. There's plenty of great Showcase Presents out there...

I *do* like trades a lot better than single issues, Eyz. But I never seem to have the patience to wait. I think this year I'm going to develop that patience. I've never heard of The Heckler, though!!

Sally, I'll probably pick up a few Flashpoint titles. I haven't seen anything about Hal Jordan yet...I'll have to look that up. I've actually been steadily buying/reading all three Green Lantern books, so be proud of me! I should start reading some older GL titles like Mosaic, for one. For some reason I always forget the Lanterns when I sit down to blog. I'll have to remedy that!

Oh, Fryman, I adore my JLI trades. It's one of the few titles I can keep coming back to and still laugh. Have you seen the episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold where Guy Gardner gets disciplined the same way? :)

Frank, I am psyched for the Giffen/Dematteis/Maguire retros coming up. But that's just two issues. :( I'm REALLY psyched to see Maguire's art, especially. I never was a huge WW or Titans fan, but maybe I'll pick those up. But Bob Haney is always fun...

i just scored a load of TPBs for under a dollar each on some closeout on Amazon, including an Etrigan Omnibus and the Sinestro Corps Wars volumes, which i loved
